Quilt binding and mitered corners

Let's talk about binding. Binding is the very last step in finishing your quilt. Once you bind your quilt and clip the last stray threads, you are done! Sounds exciting right? Well yes, until you actually start. Binding was probably the hardest lesson I learned. I admit that I learned it the hard way, (trial and error), but I did learn. Today I will share a video with you that shows how to get those coveted, sharp, mitered, corners. And trust me, once you've mastered this (and YOU WILL!) you will actually enjoy it, as much as I do. It becomes very satisfying to add the binding with those tidy corners. Here are a few things to remember before you begin:
  • Measure your quilt, (all four sides). Then add about 12 inches to compensate for the corners and any little miscalculations (it is MUCH better to have excess binding than be short an inch or two.
  • I like to use 2 and 1/2 inch wide binding.
  • Sew it together by your favorite method (I like to do the easiest possible way, no need to add complication to this task).
  • Sew the right side of the binding to the right side of the top of your quilt with a small flap folded upward, do not bother with pins at this point.
  • Stop a 1/4 inch away from your corner, pivot and sew at an angle to the edge and off of the quilt.
  • Fold neatly, and resume sewing at 1/4 inch down from the angle.
  • Do not start at the top. Rather, start on the bottom right corner. Your eye always starts at the top and goes to the right. By starting at the bottom, you are hiding your starting point.
  • Continue all the way around and end with another flap folded upward.
  • Turn quilt over, turn binding up toward you, the corners will stand upright.
  • Beginning at your starting point, fold binding in half, and pin down against the quilt.
  • When you get to each corner, play around with it until it neatly folds into place, pin, and sew down.
  • Remove all pins, press if you'd like, clip any extra threads, and you are done!!!!
  • Pat yourself on the back, I am proud of you!!! Now send me a pic so I can see what a great job you did!!!
