Q and A

I thought it would be fun to answer a few commonly asked questions so we could get to know each other better.
  • What do you sew on? I use a Singer Legacy that was given to  my by my mother, and a Tin Lizzie long arm that I recently purchased and am learning to use.
  • Where do you find your inspiration? Magazines, Like Block by Missouri Start Quilting, Quilting Folk (OMGOODNESS! If you haven't seen one, do what you can to get your hands one a copy!!!), and by following other quilters on Instagram and Pinterest.
  • What kind of fabric do you use? I prefer cotton, over all else, but have used some silks and poly blends.
  • Where do you find your fabrics? I love to frequent quilting stores but have found the best deals online such as Missouri Star Quilting, Amazon, and by shopping sales at JoAnne's. I have also been given fabrics by quilting friends.
  • Who are your favorite quilters? Oh there are so many!!! First would be my Mother in Law Margie Sue, who taught me to quilt, my friend Nancy, then would be Jenny Doan from MSQ who has generously shared so many tutorials, Victoria Findlay Wolfe for her modern, fresh, and challenging, spins on traditional patterns, Riley Blake and Tula Pink for their marvelous fabrics, tools, and patterns, The Quilting Queens of Louisiana for their contributions to the community, the late Nancy Zieman for her tutorials, patterns, books and fabric lines, Lisa Marie Saunders for her self portraits, Judith Braggs for her artistic portrayal of the early American Black community, and Anna Williams, who despite living in poverty and having very little materials, was self taught, and immensely talented, and of course, all the ladies who came before us and quilted not for fun, but for necessity. Those who frugally saved little bits of well worn clothing and feed sacks and made them into something useful, practical, and lovely, that kept their families warm in the winter, and comforted when they needed it.
  • Where do you sew? Until recently, at my dining table. This summer though, I moved my sewing machines to the family room that wasn't used very often, So now I have a designated space which really helps my productivity. It is very nice to not have to move my project off the table to make room for dinner. I am currently working on making my work space efficient and would like to have it be visually appealing as well, but that can wait.
  • How long have you been quilting? This summer marked my third year. I have been sewing since I was six, but am relatively new to quilting. I learned the Single Irish Chain first, and moved on to other designs. But when I have the need for a quick gift, I always go back to the Single Irish chain because it is very fast, and I am familiar with it.
  • Do you have any other hobbies? Yes, I am a photographer, have a family with a husband and three adult children, and live in the Mojave Desert of CA in a community that is zoned for farm animals. I currently have about 30 laying hens, two mutts, my beloved Chihuahua WillaDeen, and too many cats. I am enrolled at the local community college where I am studying Business Education Technology.

I would love to hear from you too. You can follow me on Instagram: cabezablanca_quilting_gangsta
